SSTV images

.

These are my first found SSTV images. They're poor quality because I'm a noob and have a lot to learn.

.

December 2023

Slow-Scan Television images are transmitted and exchanged by radio operators.

.

.

I found these using an online public KiwiSDR receiver.

.

.

Some users of Software-Defined Radio make their radio station publicly acessible, for free.

.

.

Using public SDR's you can scan the radiowaves using just your internet connection and computer or smartphone.

.

.

The KiwiSDR includes an SSTV decoder called "slowrx" by Oona Räisänen OH2EIQ (oh2eiq@sral.fi).

.

.

"slowrx" automatically converts the waveforms to images.

.

.

I don't know why but some images I recieved are skewed.

.

.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

.

.

When the signal is weak and there is lots of noise it results in the image being distorted by digital snow. Ho ho ho.

.

.

The term "QSL" means "I confirm receipt of your transmission". QSL can also represent a request for acknowledgement of atransmission.

.

.

QSL cards include the callsign of the sender: the radio operator or transmitter station.

The letters in this callsign suggest the operator is licensed in Canada.

.

.

Sometimes the signal to noise ratio is too great. You can see I adjusted tuning halfway through recieving the next image.

.

.

The next image was my clearest yet.

.

.

Images can be much clearer than this

.

.

I suspect this image is intentionally lo-fi.

.

.

"73" is an old telegraph short-hand code that meant “My love to you.” These days it is taken to mean "best regards" or "my compliments."

.

And that's it for now. Those fifteen images are the result of just two sessions scanning.

I learned how to do this in about 30 minutes watching video tutorials as a complete noob and I have found as many as seven images in the same amount of time.

I will update this page as I find more, and will share what I've learned in the process.

.

Want to recieve images sent from the International Space Station?

Get ready for the 40th Anniversary SSTV event taking place from 16-19 Dec 2023. SSTV from the ISS will be sent on 145.800 MHz.

Lyrics to "Radio" by Rammstein. English translation is imprecise, as I am not a German-speaker.

.

Wir durften nicht dazugehören / We were not authorised to associate

Nichts sehen, reden oder hören / Nor to see, talk, nor hear any thing

Doch jede Nacht für ein, zwei Stunden / But each night for a few hours,

Bin ich dieser Welt entschwunden / I departed from this world

Jede Nacht ein bisschen froh / Each night a bit more glad,

Mein Ohr ganz nah am Weltempfänger / my ear near to the international broadcast receiver

.

Radio, mein Radio / Radio, my radio

Ich lass’ mich in den Äther saugen / I let myself get sucked into the airwaves

Meine Ohren werden Augen / My ears turn into eyes

Radio, mein Radio / Radio, my radio

So höre ich, was ich nicht seh’ / So I hear what I can‘t see

Stille heimlich fernes Weh / Privately gratifying my wanderlust

.

Wir durften nicht dazugehören / We were not authorised to associate

Nichts sehen, reden oder stören / Nor to see, talk nor provoke anything

Jedes Liedgut war verboten / Each song was prohibited

So gefährlich fremde Noten / Such dangersome alien notes

Doch jede Nacht ein wenig froh / But each night a bit more glad

Mein Ohr ganz nah am Weltempfänger / My ear near to the international broadcast receiver

.

Radio, mein Radio / Radio, my radio

Ich lass’ mich in den Äther saugen / I allow myself get drawn into the radiowaves

Meine Ohren werden Augen / My ears turn into eyes

Radio, mein Radio (mein Radio) / Radio, my radio (my radio)

So höre ich, was ich nicht seh’ / So I hear what I can't see

Stille heimlich fernes Weh / Privately gratifying my wanderlust

.

Jede Nacht ich heimlich stieg / Each night I covertly ascended

Auf den Rücken der Musik / mounted the music

Leg’ die Ohren an die Schwingen / rested my ears on the wings

Leise in die Hände singen / crooning faintly into my hands

Jede Nacht und wieder flieg’ / Each night and again,

Ich einfach fort mit der Musik / I soar away with the music

Schwebe so durch helle Räume / Soaring like this through vivid rooms

Keine Grenzen, keine Zäune / No borders, no fences

.

Radio, Radio / Radio, radio

Radio, Radio / Radio, radio

.

Radio, mein Radio (mein Radio) / Radio, my radio (my radio)

Ich lass’ mich in den Äther saugen / I allow myself get drawn into the radiowaves

Meine Ohren werden Augen / My ears turn into eyes

Radio, mein Radio (mein Radio) / Radio, my radio (my radio)

So höre ich, was ich nicht seh’ / So I hear what I can't see

Stille heimlich fernes Weh / Privately gratifying my wanderlust
